BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Nearly 300 apartments will be built to replace a former Hunt Valley hotel, WYPR reported. The Baltimore County Council voted 5-1 Monday to override a veto from County Executive Johnny Olszewski that would've blocked the development, WYPR said.

Olszewski on Monday also withdrew legislation that would've allowed mixed-use developments without County Council approval. WYPR said a replacement bill introduced moments later would still allow mixed-use developments, but only with County Council oversight.

Mixed-use communities have commercial and residential units in the same development.

Planners think mixed-use developments create denser and walkable neighborhoods with less suburban sprawl. Others worry that mixed-use communities would overcrowd roads and schools.
