Hot Chicken Franchise Plans Big Maryland Expansion

A Nashville, Tennessee-inspired hot chicken franchise is expanding into Maryland with three new restaurants that are expected to kick off a larger rollout in the state.

Crimson Coward Hot Chicken committed to three spaces in the Baltimore area where the restaurant chain will serve up its marinated chicken, sandwiches, salads and sides. The first three locations will be at 10995 Owings Mill Blvd. in Owings Mills, the former Menchie's Frozen Yogurt location at 4211 Mountain Road in Pasadena and the former Starbucks at 7090 Deepage Drive in Columbia, the company told CoStar.

Crimson Coward expects to open 25 locations in the state over the next five years, with Annapolis-based brokerage Hyatt Commercial working with the company to find and secure locations.

The news comes roughly six months after Crimson Coward opened its first East Coast eatery in Woodbridge, Virginia. The company, which was founded in Los Angeles, has targeted the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore area for expansion due to John Filipiak and Nabil Asad's familiarity with the area as developers and franchisees of multiple brands.

"The DMV is a vibrant area that has embraced new brands to the market," Filipiak told CoStar in an email. The area provides strong demographics and income, good commercial real estate availability and a "niche in the chicken category for Nashville hot chicken that is open to develop."

The restaurants will measure roughly 1,500 square feet and incorporate a quick-service restaurant concept that prepares "fresh, never frozen, hand-cut halal chicken in an open kitchen design,” Filipiak said.
